How to Give your Garden an Appeal to the Masses by planting en masse

Updated: Feb 1, 2023

Give your garden a mass appeal by planting your plants together. By grouping certain plants together you increase the visual appeal, increases the drama of bulk and fullness, and reduce maintenance.

If you want to create impact, mass planting specific plants is a surefire method. The astilbes, for example, at the VanDusen Garden look very attractive since they are planted en masse by color. They make their blooms create a pleasing sea of colors.

Beware of making your garden look commercial installation by using only one type of plant in a big expanse. Break up the monotony by planting a few select varieties that go well together. A shrub or a small tree, especially with attractive foliage, can break the expanse.

In the above photo, the hosta Frances Wiliams looks well planted together. The weeping cherry growing above the hosta provides contrasting foliage, making the look of this area of the garden even better. The silvery leaves of the lamb's ear further heighten the appeal of the planting. Exploit the mix and match concept.
